1. Sacred smoke blend

Creating your own herbal smoke (or incense) blend is a beautiful way to connect with the elements of air and fire. The blend can be as simple, or complex as each participant desires, yet the basic method is the same.

Encourage each person to infuse their blend with  a personal intention – whether for cleansing, protection, love, or dream work, for example.

How to make it:

Set out a variety of dried herbs and flowers in bowls. Find these locally, encourage participants to also bring any herbs they have grown, or source online using the links below. Some great options include:

Ask each person to choose herbs based on their intention and blends them in a small bowl.

Stir the blend with your dominant hand while focusing on the blend’s purpose.

Charge the blend with group energy by holding hands and sharing your intention aloud.

Store the blend in a small jar, pouch or paper bag.

Label your blend with the date, moon phase, and intention for later use.

Use by burning on a charcoal disk, adding to a fire ritual, or placing in a charm bag.

2. New Intention spell jar

Spell jars are miniature vessels of magick, tightly packed with intention and power, all in the form od herbs, crystals, and other elements that hold a specific frequency.

Spell jars are a lot of fun to make in a group, as the variety of intentions, combinations, magickal ideas and creative flare can be really inspirational. Plus, the collective trust and willpower can bind the intentions, making them stronger and more likely to manifest.

Set out bowls of raw materials and ingredients like seeds, fresh soil, citrine crystal chips, and lavender (see more options below).

Encourage everyone to think carefully about the intention and purpose for their spell jar before starting, and discuss the different properties of the ingredients.

Guide everyone to layer their ingredients one by one into a small glass jar (sources below)

When complete, seal the lid of the jar with a cork, and melted wax to seal in the intention.

Encourage participants to place their jar on a personal altar at home, to inspire fresh energy.

4. Magickal, natural DIY Ink

Crafting your own natural ink is such an unusual and rewarding craft, and it’s great fun to do in a group. Huddling around the stove (or cauldron!) as your liquid bubbles, boils and steep really does feel like you’re tapping into an ancient alchemy.

Encourage everyone to bring supplies, and small glass bottles to carry their ink home. Your homemade magickal ink can be used to write petitions, draw protective symbols, or inscribe affirmations that resonate with your desires.

Ingredients & tools:
  • Base ingredients for colour, for eg. walnut husks (wisdom, grounding), hibiscus petals (love, passion, attraction), beetroot (vitality, strength, manifestation)
  • Water (moon-charged or rainwater)
  • Gum Arabic (for thickness and longevity) – get liquid here, and get powder here
  • A small pot (for simmering)
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Selection of bowls for straining (you can never have too many spares!)
  • Glass jars with lid (for storage)
  • Essential oils (a drop of rosemary for clarity, rose for love, etc. Optional)

Method:

Prepare the base: Begin by placing about ½ cup of your chosen botanical (crushed walnut husks, dried hibiscus petals,  beetroot slices) into a small pot. Add 1 cup of water, and combine, focussing on your intention for the ink, envisioning it becoming a vessel for your words and spells.

Simmer & infuse: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over low heat. Stir occasionally, and allow it to simmer for 20–30 minutes, staying present with the process.

Strain the ink: Once the liquid has deepened to a rich hue, carefully pour it through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a bowl to separate the plant material. Press the herbs gently to extract as much of the pigment as possible.

Add Gum Arabic: Stir in about ½ teaspoon of gum arabic to the strained liquid. This natural resin thickens the ink and ensures it adheres smoothly to paper without smudging. If you desire a thicker or more vibrant consistency, adjust the amount of gum arabic slowly until you reach the desired texture.

Enhance the magick (optional):
For an added layer of enchantment, add a drop of essential oil (rosemary for clarity, rose for love, or peppermint for focus). As you stir your ink, speak your intention into it, for eg. “May these words carry my desire into the universe and manifest with purpose.”

Bottle: Carefully pour the completed ink into a dark glass jar with a secure lid.

Use your ink: When ready, use your spell-infused ink with a quill, brush, or dip pen. Write petitions, affirmations, or sigils to enhance your spellwork. Inscribe candles, draw protective symbols on your altar tools, or fill the pages of your grimoire with words that now carry heightened energy and personal significance.

**Tip: Natural pigments may settle, so shake gently before each use.

5. Charm bags

Charm bags are portable spells, perfect for carrying protection, love, or prosperity magick with you. They’re also fun to craft in a group, the perfect “stitch & bitch” activity!

  • Fill with herbs, crystals, and other symbols of your intent.
  • Sew up the fourth side, or hem it and create a drawstring.
  • When complete, old the bag in your hands and breathe your energy into it.
  • Wear, carry, or place it on your altar.

6. Witch bells

Hanging witch bells are age-old protective decorative amulates hung in the homes of witches,  often used to ward off negative energies and invite positivity. The gentle sound of the bells is believed to attract good spirits while keeping unwanted energies at bay.

Crafting your own witch bells is a simple magickal process, and especially fun to do together with friends.

How to create your own witch bells:

Gather and cleanse your materials: You will need a selection of bells (metal or wooden), a sturdy string or twine, and decorative elements such as beads, crystals, or pendants. You can also use a branch or a hoop to hang the bells from.

Choose your bells: Select bells that resonate with you. The size and material can vary, but they should make a pleasant sound when jingled. You can source bells from all sorts of places, Here are some suggestions:

String the bells: Cut a length of twine and thread it through the tops of the bells. If using multiple bells, space them evenly along the string. You can also tie knots between the bells for added decoration.

Add decorative elements: As you string the bells, incorporate beads, crystals, or pendants, and even dried herbs or flowers that hold significance for you. For example, use protective stones like black tourmaline or calming herbs like lavender.

Here are some ideas. Have a browse and see what calls to you…

Create a hanging loop: Once your bells and decorations are strung, tie a secure loop at the top of the string for hanging. Make sure it’s strong enough to support the weight of the bells.
