Hey witch.
How do you feel about the wind?
It’s a force of nature – sometimes whispering, sometimes roaring, but always carrying messages, omens, and unseen energies through the ever-shifting air.
It is a voice of Spirit, the messenger of change, and could even be seen as the breath of the world itself.
Crafting your own witch’s wind chime, is a great way to attune yourself to this ethereal force, forming a bond with the wind and its spirits, and weaving your understanding and desires into the currents that swirl around you.
Wind chimes are more than simple ornaments! They’re tools of magick, instruments that capture the sacred language of the air. You can also use your wind chimes to send your intent out too, rhythmic invocations sent spiralling into the unseen.
Making witch’s wind chimes can be a powerful creative act, a loving offering, and at the end of the process, you’ll end up with a potent (and often underestimated) magickal tool.
Let’s begin…
What are witch’s wind chimes?
Witch’s wind chimes are not just decorative objects. They serve as a conduit to the elemental power of air, forming a sacred link between you and the unseen forces that whisper through the wind.
They act as an interface, a mystical threshold where you can commune with the Spirits of air, receiving their messages and sending your own intentions into the shifting currents.
The chimes resonate with the energy of the wind, creating a harmonic bridge between the physical and the spiritual realms. As they sing in response to the air’s touch, they can carry your desires outward, dispersing protective energies, inviting blessings, or amplifying spells.
Likewise, the subtle shifts in their melody may reveal omens, guidance, or the voices of the wind spirits themselves, offering wisdom to those who listen.
How to make your own witch wind chimes
Making witch wind chimes is a personal and intuitive process, allowing you to craft a powerful tool attuned to your energy.
There is no singular right way to do it – let your instincts guide you. Saying that, following a process can make it so much easier, so below I’m sharing the basic steps to making witch wind chimes.
The key to remember, is that the intention you hold will be infused into each element, so get that clear before you begin. The unique combination of materials you incorporate will also be guied by this.
Here are a few suggested steps to follow, but honestly, trust your intuitive guidance, and use the objects and materials that call to you.
1. Choose your base
First decide whether you want your chimes to hang in a line, or a circle.
Tube chimes commonly hang in a circle, with a round striker in the middle of them, but they also work really well hanging in a line. For this you could use sturdy branch, a piece of driftwood, or even a large piece of bone or an antler.
For a circular chime, you’ll need a metal or plastic hoop. Here are some options:
- Classic metal rings, different sizes
- Extra large metal rings
- 12 inch crescent moon, set of 2 (my favourite!)
- Purpose made transparent hoops – easy to use, and come with a nylon thread
- Round wooden top also comes with thread and hooks
2. Choose your tube bells
For the classic wind chime sound, you’ll need tube bells.
These are easy to find. You or a friend may have an old wind chime you can repurpose, but they are inexpensive to buy. Here are some good choices:
- Set of 90 bells, 5 different lengths
- Set of 60 bells
- Multicoloured tube bells – these are SO much fun!
If you’re open to your wind chimes sounding different, you can omit tube bells and use different chimes, or simply allow the objects you choose to knock together. But bear in mind the sound may not carry or hold such a sweet resonance.
If you do want to try using other bells, these are all lovely choices:
- Boho style bells
- Brass minimal cow bell (I really love these)
- Rustic fire-finished bells
- Handmade Indian chimes
3. Choose your extra elements
The extra additions are what elevates your wind chimes from an everyday decoration to a magickal tool. Maybe you have natural objects (bones, shells, twigs) you’ve been collecting? Or perhaps you want to showcase a specific theme or intention?
Here are some examples of different charms, crystals and ornaments you could add. Have a browse and see what calls to you…
- Pentacle charms for protection
- Raven skull charms – I LOVE these!
- Tree of life and triple moon charms
- Leaf and feather charms
- Real feathers
- Eye of Horus and Egyptian Ankh charms
- Mixed vintage key charms to lock out negativity
- Celestial sun, moon and star charms
- Minimalist crescent moon charms 16 pcs) I love these for a more classic look
- Bones
- Shells
- Beautiful twigs and twisted roots
- Small pebbles
4. Gather all your materials together
Get everything together first! If you have all your materials laid out in front of you, you can ritualise the construction of your witch’s wind chimes – they are a magickal tool, after all.
You’ll need:
The base – see above.
Hooks: These need to hang your finished wind chimes in place, whilst allowing them to move:
- Black swivel hooks (12-pack)
- 6 Stainless steel swivel hooks
- 10 Polished swivel hoos with rubber ends
Nylon cord: You can use a natural twine or leather, but remember this will be hanging outside, and you don’t want it to perish. These are good choices, and TBH, the thickness and colour depends on your preference, and how you want it to look.
- Fine, invisible fishing line (0.2mm)
- Black nylon cord (1.5mm)
- Blue nylon cord (1mm)
- Golden cord (0.8mm)
Tube bells – see above
A striker and a sail (for round chimes). The striker hangs between your tube bells and is what bumps into them, making the sound. The sail is another object, hanging down from the striker, which catches the wind, making the striker move. You can use pieces of wood, driftwood, shells, bones, talismans, or anything else that looks great and works well.
Extra charms or crystals – see above
Scissors, hot glue and small pliers for fiddly work – to assemble everything
5. Cleanse and charge your materials
Before you start putting your witch’s wind chimes together, take a moment to cleanse your materials. This is especially important if you’re repurposing objects or got them second-hand.
Even new materials will have an energetic echo from their manufacturing process, so don’t skip this step.
You can use herbal smoke incense, sprinkle them with salt, or moon water, or pass them through a flame (safely).
While you’re doing this, focus on your intention for the chimes, whether it’s connection, devotion, protection, peace, abundance, or anything else.
6. Tie on the bells
Cut your cord into varying lengths and attach your tube bells securely to the base. You can tie them with knots, and use hot glue for extra hold.
If you’re using a striker and sail, attach these both to one piece of cord, so that the striker hangs at the centre of your bells, and the sail hangs below them.
If you’re hanging your bells in a line, make sure they’re close enough to chime and jangle together.
7. Add charms and decorations
This is where it gets really fun, and you can let your creativity shine! Add charms, symbols, feathers, bones, and any other meaningful items that you feel inspired to include.
Tie them onto your witch bells in whatever arrangement feels intuitively right.
I know crystals can look beautiful, but I would recommend you don’t use them, as they may crack, break, and/or fade in the sunlight.
8. Secure, bless and awaken your witch’s wind chimes
Once everything is assembled, give your chimes a little test jingle to ensure everything is secure.
Then, bless them in your preferred way. This may mean holding them in a beam of moonlight, saying a blessing, or anointing them with a magical oil. Be intentional, and heartfelt and give gratitude for their spirit.
Hang them outside where they’ll catch the breeze and you’ll hear them every day.
6 Ways to use witch’s wind chimes in your practice
Most witches hang their chimes outside from the branch of a tree, or near the door, to appreciate their gentle sound each time the inside and outside worlds connect.
But these magickal tools can be utilised in other ways too. Here are a few ideas:
1. Receiving messages from the wind spirits
Pay attention to the chime’s melody and movement. Sudden changes or unusual patterns may be signs or omens from the spirits of air.
2. Casting a spell
Whisper your intention into the wind chime before the breeze catches it. Each chime carries your spell into the ether.
3. Protection charm
Hang a wind chime at your doorway or window, charging it to dispel negative energies and keep your home safe (much like witch bells)
4. Divination tool
If faced with a challenge or situation you don’t understand, use your wind chime for scrying. Medite on its sound, allowing the messages of the wind spirits to guide your intuition.
5. Energy cleansing
Bring the chimes inside, and open a window to let the breeze in. The sound vibrations of the chime can clear stagnant or harmful energies from a space, refreshing and renewing its atmosphere.
6. Manifestation aid
Every time the wind moves your chime, visualize your desires being carried into reality, reinforcing your intention with every note.
Making witch’s wind chimes bells is a gorgeous way to blend creativity and magick. Every chime is a little reminder of your power, your intentions, and the energy you’ve chosen to bring into your life.
I hope you enjoy making yours as much as I’ve enjoyed sharing this process with you. Happy crafting, friend.
Blessed be!
