10 Wonderful Ways to Work With Waxing Moon Energy

Flame and Waxing Moon with text: How to Harness Waxing Moon Energy

Waxing Moon energy could bring the breakthrough you need…

Waxing Moon energy is a GIFT! Honestly, there are SO many positives to the waxing, flowing half of the lunar cycle. In fact, lessons on how to harness waxing Moon energy should be on every school curriculum, lol!

The waxing Moon brings playfulness, creativity, possibility, inspired action, and connectivity to the cosmic cauldron. BUT it can actually be pretty tricky for most people to ride with. In fact…  you – like many others folks – could be unconsciously resisting this “too good to be true” lunar energy! Want to get back into your flow? Read on…

But… before we dive in, what IS waxing Moon energy? And how does this Moon phase fit into the rest of the lunar cycle?

The waxing Moon phases are when lunar energy and light are increasing…

Hot on the heels of the New Moon, the waxing phases encompass the crescent Moon, first quarter, and waxing gibbous Moons. The waxing Moon phase describes the whole two weeks between the New and Full Moons, when light is visibly increasing across the surface of the Moon.

Even though the energy is the same across the entire globe, HOW this looks depends on where in the world you live:

  • In the Northern hemisphere, light increases from right to left
  • In the Southern hemisphere, light increases from left to right.

Now, let’s take a super-quick look at the lunar cycle as a whole, so that you can see how the waxing Moon phases fit into the entire 29.5 day cycle:

The eight Moon phases

There are 8 (well actually 9!) phases that make up the lunar cycle. Here's a breakdown -

New Moon

This Moon begins the cycles. The new lunar phase arrives when old Grandmother Moon has just become visible. She is a sliver of light, an emerging crescent Moon in the daytime sky.

Waxing Crescent Moon

Rising during the daytime and setting in the western evening sky, the Moon in this phase has a more obvious waxing crescent shape.

First-quarter Moon

Forming an astrological square with the Sun, this phase is revealed as a clear “half Moon” shape. Light will expand, overtaking the dark quarter.

Waxing gibbous Moon

Here, the Moon is closer to her Full Moon phase, than the New. In this waxing gibbous phase, she’s a more bulbous, blossoming disc of light.

Full moon

Everybody looks up into the sky and knows this phase! She’s fully illuminated. At the Full Moon phase, la Luna rises with the Sunset, and sets herself, when the Sun rises.

Waning gibbous Moon

Past the cycle’s climax, the Moon here, is almost a mirror image of her waxing gibbous phase – still a swollen round disc but ebbing away (retreating) from one edge.

Last-quarter Moon

Forming another astrological square with our solar king, this phase - also known as the third quarter - is also a clear “half Moon” shape. This time, though, dark will overtake the light.

Waning crescent Moon (or balsamic Moon)

Closer now to the next New Moon, than to this cycle’s full Moon phase, this Moon appears more fragile-looking and weak. She appears again, as a daytime companion.

Dark Moon

Between one and three days (and nights) where the Moon is invisible. She is actually rising with the Sun. So she is there in the sky with us during the day, awake when we are… But bleached out by sunlight, not visible. And absent completely from the night sky.

What does waxing Moon energy feel like?

Do you know anything about archetypes?

Well, the waxing Moon feels a lot like the archetype of the maiden.

It’s fresh, positive, playful, bright, inspired, and uplifting.

Early on, this Moon has an emergent feel – like air in the Springtime, when a winter of darkness is finally lifting. There’s a sense of relief, optimism, and the motivation to take action.

The energy of the waxing Moon is curious and open. It’s interested in the opportunities life has to offer, and willing to receive. Waxing Moon energy builds, grows, creates, and absorbs.

Remember – the Moon receives not only sunlight, but frequencies from all the other planets too. (These planets are actually closer to the Moon than the Sun – is it any wonder She also absorbs – and radiates out – their transmissions too?

In the waxing half of the lunar cycle, la Luna is receiving MORE.

Gathering strength, She also gives more.

… And so it is with us!

As above, so below… YOU are a mirror of the Moon and her energy

The way energy tends to manifest through you and your life, is usually a reflection of how lunar energy is manifesting in the world. And this depends on where SHE is in her cycle.

Because waxing Moon energy lasts a whole fortnight, it changes quite a lot during this time. Let’s look at the three main phases of the waxing Moon.

Energy of the waxing crescent Moon

Emerging from the New Moon, lunar light and energy in this lunar phase can be felt as delicate, gentle, and even juvenile. It’s budding – without the confidence or self-assuredness that comes from age and experience – but SO full of potential!

This is how you’re likely to feel under the waxing crescent Moon.

There’s a delicacy, a shyness that wants to hold back and stay out of the limelight. But this is still the start of an extroverted time. So unlike under the waning Moon phases, energy is turned outwards.

As the waxing Moon energy edges further into the first quarter phase and her light increases, so will your self-confidence and desire to be seen.

Energy of the first-quarter Moon

At the first quarter Moon phase, the Sun and Moon are squaring. Any astrological square brings tension, and whenever that happens… something’s gotta give!

In this case, it’s the darkness.

Remember how YOUR energy mirrors the energy of the Moon?

At the first quarter Moon, you’re being invited to release some of your darkness, by shining a light into it. To let the light of possibility and potential prevail.

This usually means a challenge will show up. Maybe a problem you need to face head-on, or an old pattern that needs to be seen. Something STUCK is asking to be moved. And crucially, you need to DO something about it: First-quarter Moon phases are calls to action – so this flavour of waxing Moon energy is all about action.

Energy of the waxing gibbous Moon

This stage of the lunar cycle can be intense.

In fact, not many people can truly harness waxing Moon energy when She’s this close to full Moon!

As She gathers strength, so must you… because this is a lunar phase of pure stamina!

Closer now to her Full phase than New Moon, the waxing gibbous Moon is a time of near completion. NEAR is the critical word here – at this phase, plans, projects, and manifestations are almost realized… but not quite. There’s still a final push needed to reach the finish line. At this point of waxing Moon energy, this push will look different for us all.

So… How can you actually harness waxing Moon energy and work with this phase without burning out? Here are 10 things to try…

1. Make a plan

First off, don’t make the mistake of thinking once you’ve set your New Moon intentions, the work is done! When the waxing crescent phase hits, it’s time to start laying down plans. Think about –

  • What conditions need to be present, for your intention to manifest?
  • How will you create the opportunities you need?
  • Who will you connect with to get bigger wheels turning?
  • And most importantly, WHEN will you take the action?

At some point under the crescent Moon, be sure to grab your calendar and start putting in do-by-dates for the tasks you need to accomplish.

2. Take Inspired action… every day!

For all the effort you put into building, creating, and growing something new in your life… Spirit, (God, the Goddess, the Universe…) will rise up to meet you. Even if it doesn’t always appear that way to you, cogs are turning on the inner planes. Strings are being pulled and momentum is building in ways that you may not detect yet.

So keep your own momentum going. Try to take at least one inspired action every day

  • Make a phone call
  • Fill in that application
  • Repeat an affirmation
  • Ask the question
  • Take that leap
  • Perform a ritual

If you feel overwhelmed, break down bigger, more complex tasks into smaller ones and tick off at least one thing every day, until the Full Moon arrives.

3. Restore and nourish

“During the two weeks of the waxing Moon everything that you do to build up and strengthen your body and its organs, to fortify yourself in general is much more effective than when the Moon is on the wane” writes Johanna Paungger and Thomas Poppe in the book: Moon Time.

In the last decade, the whole “clean eating” movement has done a lot to make people fear eating rich, fatty, mineral-rich food. But our bodies NEED bio-available vitamins and minerals, like iron, magnesium, copper, and calcium. Our nervous systems need good amounts of fat to function properly and our bones and teeth need to be fortified.

Under the growing gaze of our waxing Moon energy, the fat, minerals and vitamins in the food you eat are SO much more readily absorbed into your blood and bones! So save your detox for the waning Moon, and really serve yourself under these flowing lunar phases, by getting properly nourished.

4. Collaborate

The later stages of the waxing Moon are when you’ll tend to feel more open, connected, generous, and sociable. As light increases, and the energy she radiates down onto Earth gains potency, you’ll feel more energy rise in you too.

Make the most of it – always schedule meetings and networking events under waxing Moon energy.

5. Act differently (especially on the 1st quarter Moon)

Remember how the first quarter phase is actually an astrological square?

Well, in astrology squares usually feel tricky, as they show up somewhere that two different forces are vying for position in your life.

So it’s important you realize that squares are opportunities for growth. Opportunities to CHOOSE which force you want to align with, and which you want to let go of. Often this will take the form of:

  • An old pattern showing up
  • The same disagreement you keep having with someone
  • A knee-jerk reaction
  • A habit you can’t shake
  • A tired old behaviour
  • OR even something older… an ancestral trauma or generational wound.

The first quarter Moon wants you to act differently around this. To choose the higher path, and resist manifesting those old ways into the world again.

So try to pause, and ask yourself how can you BE more awakened in the way you’re participating in life?

6. Take a risk (try something new)

Harness waxing lunar energy by being courageous and moving beyond the confines of what feels familiar. Remember your efforts will always be matched by the Moon and her consciousness.

BE bold!

7. Perform a manifesting ritual

Why not sprinkle a little magic throughout the lunar cycle?! New Moon rituals and Full Moon rituals are, of course, the most popular. But remember: energy is rising growing, and building under a waxing Moon. Anything you do to create, receive, and absorb will be amplified. So it is with ritual.

For ideas and inspiration, read this article: 5 Manifesting Rituals to Perform Under a Waxing Moon

8. (at the waxing gibbous phase) Make course-corrections

“Plan, and take action…” could be the waxing Moon’s rally cry! BUT what happens if plans need to change?!!

Well… Plans often DO need to change, as life moves in mysterious ways (had you noticed?!)

And here’s the thing: It’s usually under the waxing gibbous Moon, when you’ll need to adapt most quickly.

It may feel like you’re being tested (I really have to do THAT to reach my goal?!) or even initiated into a new way of being. Remember that Full Moon brings fruition, culmination, and graduation from an old way of being.

And the waxing gibbous Moon needs you to show that you’ve earned it.

9. Harness waxing Moon energy by not giving up!

Because this lunar phase comes almost a full two weeks after you’ve set your intentions, it’s easy to feel bored, disheartened, disillusioned, or just plain disappointed if what you’ve been hoping for doesn’t appear to be manifesting.

But you’re actually not there yet!

Like the woman in the late stages of labour who wants nothing more than to throw in the towel (but can’t, obvs) YOU need to keep going with your efforts at this phase.

Do not give up.

If things don’t manifest as you wanted, it may be that more cycles are needed, and more understanding will come around that. But you won’t reach that level of knowing, if you drop out of the race now.

10. Call in the Goddess

For hope, strength, inspiration, beauty, love, gratitude, magic… call in the Goddess to hold, witness, and support you.

Whatever you do in life, call in the Goddess to hold, witness, and support you.
