July Witchcraft: 13 Magickal Tasks, Spells, Tips & Ideas for the Summer Witch

July is the month of ripening – the sun burns bright, fruits swell with sweetness, and the air is thick with hot, balmy energy.

The fire of summer is at its most intense now, stirring passion, courage, growth, and sometimes chaos. It’s a month of vibrant motion, but also of deep reflection as we approach the threshold of Lughnasadh (also known as Lammas) – the first harvest festival.

This is a time to honour the rich abundance offered to us by Mother Earth, to work with solar and storm energies, to travel, have fun and see friends, and to get intimate with both the physical and spiritual realms.

The magic of July is bold and brilliant, crafted from red fruits, full moons, and golden hours.

Below, you’ll find 13 witchy tasks to deepen your practice and help you move through July with purpose, enchantment, and reverence. So choose the activities that calls to you, and let’s dive in…

1. Prepare for Lughnasadh

Lughnasadh, or Lammas, is celebrated on August 1st, and marks the beginning of the harvest season. July is the time to prepare for this sacred festival, because if you don’t get ready early, you’ll miss it!

Tend to your garden or visit a local farmers market, to immerse yourself in the season’s produce. Choose seasonal foods like berries, fresh herbs, corn, and sunflowers.

Create a small altar space where you can place offerings of these items as a gesture of thanks to the spirits of the land.

You might also journal, or write a letter to yourself about what you’ve been “growing” in your life since spring – projects, relationships, healing. On Lughnasadh, reflect on what has come to fruition.

    2. Cast a Rain Spell During a Summer Storm

Storms in July carry immense magickal charge.

When the sky darkens and the air thickens with anticipation, prepare to work with the wild energy of rain. Gather a jar or bowl to collect storm water – preferably from the first heavy drops. As you hold the vessel out, whisper your intentions into the rain:

    • What do you wish to cleanse?
    • What do you long to call in?

Once collected, you can use this stormwater in spells of transformation, power, or emotional release. Add it to your ritual baths, sprinkle it around thresholds for purification, or use it to anoint your tools.

    3. Host a Fire Ceremony

Nothing speaks summer magick like fire!

Set aside a night to create a sacred fire – whether it’s a bonfire, a candle circle, or even a small cauldron flame. Invite friends or go solo. Begin by casting a circle and deeply grounding yourself. Then burn herbs such as rosemary, mugwort, juniper or pine needles as offerings to the Spirit of fire.

Speak aloud your gratitude for all that’s blooming in your life. Then, whisper your wishes for what you want to grow or change. You might write down intentions or burdens and burn them in the flames.

Close the ritual with stillness, watching the last sparks fly skyward.

    4. Work with the Buck Moon

July’s full moon is known as the Buck Moon, named for the time when male deer regrow their antlers.

This moon pulses with themes of strength, growth, and personal evolution. On the night of the full moon, create a simple altar with antler imagery (or symbols of growth like branches or bones), and leave out any items you want to charge up and empower.

Meditate under the moonlight and ask yourself:

    • What am I ready to grow into?
    • What strength have I neglected or overlooked?

Pull tarot or oracle cards for insight, and journal your revelations.

    5. Make a Red Fruit Offering

July’s fruits are juicy, ripe, and bursting with sweetness. Strawberries, cherries, raspberries, and watermelon are not only seasonal delights but also carry spiritual properties of their own, namely love, fertility, and devotion.

Gather a small plate of red fruits and leave it outside on a clean surface (stone, leaf, or dish) as an offering to love spirits, ancestors, or local fae. If indoors, you can place the offering on your altar.

Speak aloud your gratitude for the sweetness in life!

    6. Create a Protection Spell for Travel

Summer often stirs the urge to roam. Whether you’re headed far or simply venturing out more often, craft a protective charm to keep you safe on the move.

Combine herbs like basil (protection), black pepper (warding), and lavender (peace) in a small pouch. Add a tiny shell, or a crystal like black tourmaline or tiger’s eye.

Hold the charm in your hands and visualise it glowing with protective light. Say: “With this charm, I move protected, grounded, and watched over.” Keep it in your bag or glovebox.

    7. Harvest Magickal Herbs at Sunrise

July is usually blooming with abundance, and the energy of plants is freshest at dawn, especially in high summer.

This month brings a beautiful opportunity to rise early and respectfully harvest herbs, such as lavender, thyme, rosemary, or yarrow. As you snip each sprig, thank the plant for its spirit and healing. Avoid overharvesting – take only what you’ll use.

Dry the herbs for use in spells, incense, baths, or teas. You might also bind small bundles to hang near your door for protection or blessing.

    8. Work with Yarrow for Boundaries

Yarrow blooms abundantly in July, and is a classic herb for boundaries and protection. Dry some yarrow and sew it into a charm bag, or add it to a jar spell with salt, peppercorns, and a personal symbol (like a nail or thorn). Keep it on your desk, altar, or person when you need to assert your energy.

Alternatively, brew a tea or make a tincture using dried yarrow and alcohol, and dab it on your pulse points before attending intense or potentially draining gatherings.

    9. Make a Chamomile Prosperity Wash

Chamomile is known for drawing money, luck, and peace – and July is its prime time!

Brew a strong tea with dried or fresh chamomile flowers. Once cooled, use this golden infusion to wash your front door, altar, wallet or cash drawer. Speak a chant as you wipe:

    “Golden bloom and sunlit cheer,
Bring me blessings far and near.”

    Repeat weekly for continuous flow!

    10. Honour the Oak Tree

The Oak is a sacred tree of July, representing strength, wisdom, and endurance. Spend time sitting beneath a mature oak, grounding yourself and listening for its guidance. Oak trees are powerful for both spirit communication and ancestral connection.

Collect fallen acorns or small twigs (never pluck from the tree) and use them in spellwork for protection or long-term goals. You could also carve a sigil into an acorn and bury it near your home for stability.

    1. Paint or Carve a Summer Wand

Create a wand from a fallen branch, or a piece of driftwood. Clean and sand it, then paint or carve it with symbols that speak of summer – suns, flames, waves, or runes of your choosing.

You can wrap it in red or gold thread, embed a crystal in the top, or anoint it with sun oil. Use your wand in any rituals that call on fire, joy, creativity, or transformation.

    12. Perform a Mid-Year Divination

July is a pivotal month – the calendar year’s halfway mark. This makes it a powerful time for reflection and redirection.

Set up your divination tools (tarot, runes, pendulum, etc.) and ask:

    • What have I accomplished so far?

    • What do I need to release?

    • What energy will guide me in the second half of the year?

Write down your findings and create an action plan or spell to support your goals going forward.

    13. Brew a Mugwort Dream Tea

Mugwort is lush and potent in July, perfect for dreamwork and lunar magic. Steep a teaspoonful of fresh mugwort in hot water, optionally blending with mint or honey for taste.

Sip slowly before bed while setting your intention for dream travel or guidance (don’t drink mugwort night after night – it can harm the liver if drunk in excess, so three nights in a row is the maximum before you need to take a break).

Alternatively, place a mugwort sachet under your pillow or burn a sprig and let the smoke plume waft in your bedroom, to strengthen your psychic vision. Keep a dream journal nearby – you may receive vivid, important messages.
