This is a beautiful time to craft. The equinox carries a sense of pause and reflection, as well as the promise of quietude and preparation for the darker half of the year. Through creating with your hands, you can honour the shifting seasons and weave intention into your celebrations.

1. Harvest Altar Decorations

Celebrate the season of abundance by crafting a beautiful harvest-themed altar.

Fill your sacred space with symbols of the harvest, like cornucopias, autumn leaves, and crystal points such as carnelian or citrine to evoke (and hold onto) prosperity and positivity. Adorn your altar with earthy tones and harvest items like apples, pumpkins, and acorns – whatever’s abundant in your area. For extra additions, check out the suggestions below

2. Equinox Ritual Candles

Hand-poured candles infused with wild foraged herbs, oils, and crystals make powerful tools for spellwork.

Create your own ritual candles to bring balance and harmony during the equinox. Infuse them with your favourite essential oils, or those that feel especially autumny to you, such as frankincense, cinnamon, clove, and orange, to bring warmth and abundance into your space.

These candles are perfect for your Mabon altar or ritual space.

Supplies you’ll need:

3. Equinox blessing broom

Craft your own witch’s besom broom, specifically to call in blessings this Autumn Equinox. This is a potent tool for cleansing spaces and attracting good energy, especially during seasonal changes.

Make your broom from a handle of oak, hazel, or apple wood.  Gather twigs, dried grasses, or stiff herbs (birch, lavender stalks, broom, rosemary will all work well) and bundle them around the broom handle, tying tightly with natural twine or jute cord.

Embellish your broom using extra dried herbs, dried flowers,  and small charms and small crystals (use a hot melt glue gun to secure).

5. Pumpkin Spice Soap

Craft your own pumpkin-spiced soap, infused with autumnal herbs like sage, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Using a readymade soap base makes this craft really simple, and it’s much safer than the traditional method, which uses lye (on its own, it’s quite corrosive).

To make yours, work out how much soap base oyu need to fill your moulds, and melt in a double boiler (we recommend using THIS stainless steel pot over a large pan).

Once melted, add a teaspoon of cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg, and a little ground sage for a warm, autumn scent. Stir in a few drops of your chosen essential oil for extra fragrance.

Pour the melted soap into moulds and let it cool for a few hours until solid. Once set, remove the soap from the moulds, and it’s ready to use or gift!

6. Leaf & charm bracelets

While away the hours creating gorgeous handmade charm bracelets featuring metal leaves, fall-inspired gemstones, and autumn symbols.

Craft necklaces or bracelets using gemstones like garnet or amber, which symbolize abundance, warmth, and the harvest season. This jewelry can be worn during Mabon rituals or gifted to a loved one.

Combine crystals with warm tones and a grounding frequency, like smoky quartz, garnet and amber. Add pops of citrine and glistening carnelian for luck and positivity as the days darken.

7. Mabon Scented Wax Melts

Mabon scented wax melts are a perfect way to bring the cosy scents of autumn into your home while keeping things safe and simple.

When used with an electric wax warmer, they’re a safer alternative to burning candles, as they don’t require an open flame. Plus, the scent can last longer than traditional candles.

Making your own wax melts is easy. Start by melting soy wax in a double boiler. Add your favorite essential oils in a perfect autumn blend – for Mabon, try scents like cinnamon, pumpkin, clove, and apple to evoke the spirit of the season. Yum!

After stirring the oils into the melted wax, pour the mixture into silicone molds or ice cube trays and let them cool completely until solid.

Once set, you can pop the wax melts out of the molds and store them in a jar. When you want to use, simply place a wax melt in your warmer, and enjoy the gorgeous aromas as they slowly fill your space.

8. Dried & Pressed Flower Lanterns

Use dried and pressed flowers and pressed herbs to create stunning round paper lanterns that glow with the colours and patterns of late summer blooms. When lit, they’ll bring warmth to your evening. They’re a beautiful way to honour the waning sun.

You will need:

How to make your lanterns

First make sure your flowers are fully dried and flat. You could use a selection of different flowers, or keep it simple with one kind of petal.

Next, using a brush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the outside of your paper bag, and then carefully press your dried flowers onto the glued surface. Arrange them in patterns or let them fall naturally.

Brush another light layer of glue over the flowers to secure and protect them. Let everything dry completely.

To use your lanterns, place a jar inside and a battery-powered tea light inside the jar. As the light shines through the paper, the pressed flowers glow like stained glass.

Make a set, and place your lanterns along your garden path, or on your windowsill to honour the sun and extend its magick into the night.

Tip: If you like this craft, get creative with  THESE round Chinese-style paper lanterns. Gluing your pressed flowers to these can be tricky, but they look amazing! Secure a battery-powered tea light to the metal base of each one and suspend them from trees.

9. Equinox Spell Jars

Making Equinox spell jars is one of my favourite ways to honour the balance of light and dark during the Autumn Equinox, and set intentions for the season.

To make your own, start by filling a small glass jar with ingredients that represent balance. I love to use dried lavender for peace, rosemary for protection, and cinnamon for prosperity.

Add a few small crystals – moonstone is beautiful for balance or citrine for abundance.

Write your personal intention on a small piece of paper and tuck it into the jar, before adding a pinch of sea salt to purify, and a few drops of essential oils like frankincense or sandalwood for grounding.

Once your jar is full, seal the lid on with wax and place it on your altar or somewhere special to keep the energy flowing. You can also meditate with the jar or simply keep it nearby to support your intentions throughout the season.

10. Celtic Knotwork

Celtic knotwork is a beautiful and ancient symbol of cycles, eternity, and interconnectedness, making it a perfect motif for Mabon crafts.

There are SO many designs and methods, from simple beginners’ knots to really complex patterns. Knotwork can be both relaxing and meaningful, and through it, you’ll create a unique piece to add to your home or altar.

This Celtic knotwork cord piece can be framed as a wall hanging, used as a centerpiece, or even turned into a pendant for a necklace. You can add beads, small crystals, or other decorations to enhance the energy of the craft and make it more personal.

Rather than try to describe the method here, I’m recommending a couple of books and YouTube videos, along with my favourite cords to use:

These are addictive to make! So grab a supply of wooden spoons… once you start scorching, it’s hard to stop!

13. Mabon Potpourri

Make your own potpourri using autumn flowers, cinnamon sticks, orange peels, and cloves to fill your home with the scent of the harvest season.

This is fun to make, can be easily adapted according to what you have gathered locally, and is perfect for creating a cosy and magickal atmosphere.

Simply gather your supplies and combine in a large decorative bowl. Place on windowsills, your mantlepiece or dressing table. Stir frequently  to refresh and release the fragrance.

    14. Goddess Harvest Dolls

Goddess Harvest Dolls are a gorgeous way to honour the Goddess at harvest season.

These dolls represent fertility and abundance and can be used in your Mabon rituals or displayed on your altar. The key is to craft with reverence, so that your creativity becomes an offering in itself.

To make your own, start by gathering a bundle of dried wheat or straw. Secure the middle of the bundle with twine to form the body. Then, fold another small bundle of straw or flowers and attach it to the sides for arms. For the head, use a small ball of dried flower petals, a wooden bead, or another small round object, and tie it to the top of the body with twine.

You can add small ribbons or beads to decorate the doll and make it unique. As you craft, think about the intentions of abundance and gratitude for the harvest. Once finished, place your Goddess doll on your altar or in your home to celebrate the season.

The Complete Book of Straw Craft and Corn Dollies is a beautiful (and rare!) book with loads of detailed instructions on making these kind of sacred little straw effigies and decorations.

      15. Herbal Harvest Salt

Blend dried herbs into coarse salt to make a delicious (and magickal) seasoning for protection, abundance, and grounding. This is a super simple craft, and always sells well, as herbal salts are something people use in so many ways.

Simply grind your herbs in a mortar and pestle, and combine with salt. If using fresh herbs, grind them and mix with salt, then dry out on a baking sheet in a very low oven until all the moisture has gone.

Once made, pour into beautiful jars and label. These can be used in cooking, sprinkled on thresholds, or used in all sorts of protection charms and spell jars. Be sure to include all relevent information on labels.
