Let’s begin…
Shadow Foods
In witchcraft, shadow work is the practice of facing and integrating the parts of ourselves we often avoid – our grief, rage, fears, and forgotten truths. By turning inward with compassion, we’re able to reclaim power, purpose clarity
This board holds ingredients aligned with that journey, including foods that resonate with the dark moon, and sensual pleasure, whilst awakening emotional truth, and igniting transformation.
Each item carries an energetic signature that supports deep connection and inner alchemy.
Energetic Properties of the Ingredients:
-
Blackberries: Symbolise ancestral connection and emotional depth. Their dark hue speaks to hidden wisdom and the sweetness found in facing the unknown.
-
Figs: Actually a blooming flower turned inwards on itself, figs are tied to feminine power, fertility, and the mysteries of the body. Their lush, sweet, delicate core invites vulnerability and sensuality.
-
Blueberries: Enhance intuition and psychic clarity. A moon-aligned fruit often used in divination and spiritual protection.
-
Black grapes: Associated with abundance, ritual celebration, and shadow integration, inviting you to toast what’s real, not just what’s pretty.
-
Dark chocolate: Opens the heart chakra and grounds the spirit. Bittersweet magic that mirrors the complexity of emotional truth.
-
Blue cheese: Bold and unapologetic, it encourages authenticity and emotional honesty. Excellent for “cutting through the noise” and sparking deep conversation.
-
Aged cheddar: Represents wisdom through time and the value of experience. Its sharpness awakens clarity and expression.
-
Walnuts: Sacred to Mercury, these curious-looking tree nuts enhance inner wisdom, intellectual insight, and spiritual downloads. Physically resembling the brain, they can also inspire food for thought and truth.
-
Black olives: Tied to lunar magic, protection, and clarity of intention. Their brininess is purifying and mood-lifting.
-
Charcoal crackers / black bread: Represent transformation, fire energy, and alchemy. What has been burned away to reveal something richer and more pure.
-
Smoked meats: Deeply grounding, carrying the frequency of elemental fire and strength. Their smoky richness evokes primal energy, passion, and rootedness.
-
Mushrooms: Earthy and liminal, they thrive in darkness and decay, symbolising rebirth, mystery, and communication between worlds. Excellent for rituals involving spirit work or intuitive connection.
- Citrus (Blood orange, lemon): Offers emotional balance, a touch of brightness, and solar energy to balance the board’s lunar weight.
- Honey or balsamic glaze: Sweetness that softens intensity; symbolises compassion, nourishment, and the ability to hold both light and dark.
Optional garnishes:
- Pomegranate seeds: Tied to Persephone, the underworld, and rebirth. Add for mythic resonance and rich, ruby colour.
-
Rosemary sprigs: For remembrance, clarity, and ritual cleansing.
-
Edible flowers (violets, pansies, borage): For beauty, subtle enchantment, and honoring emotional sensitivity.
Midnight Mirror charcuterie Board Assembly & Ritual
This is so simple, it’s not even a recipe!
Simply choose a selection of ingredients from the list above, to create a board that’s visually dramatic, sensually rich, and spiritually aligned.
Here are some steps you may like to follow when assembling your board. If you’re hosting a witchy gathering – perhaps a dark or full Moon circle, or a Samhain supper – simply prepare your charcuterie board an hour or so before guests arrive.
Cleanse your space: Light a candle, burn mugwort or rosemary, and take a moment to call in your intention: “I am ready to see what’s hidden. I am ready to hold all parts of myself.”
Arrange with intuition: Lay your ingredients on a dark wooden or slate board. Build in spirals or crescent moon shapes. Let colour and texture guide you. Don’t rush — this is an act of spellwork. Need a charcuterie board? We love these:
- Dark wooden circular board
- Stunning 16″x 12″ slate
- Olive wood & black resin – our favourite!
Infuse each ingredient with purpose: As you place each item onto the board, speak its magical role aloud or silently. For example: “Blackberries — I invite depth. Blue cheese — I face discomfort with strength.”
Eat slowly, reflect deeply: As you enjoy with friends and coven sisters and brothers, be curious, be truthful, open your hearts to each other.
Pair with red wine, hibiscus tea, or mulled cider.
Stretch out the time you are together, chatting, journaling, drawing tarot or oracle cards. This charcuterie board could also be served during a witchy craft night, when gathered with creative friends, sharing inspiration and skills.
