13 Easy Spells to Add to Your First Witch Spell Book

Hello, dear keeper of magick…

A witch’s spell book is probably the most important tool you’ll own as a magickal practitioner. More than simply pages and ink, with time and devotion, it can become an incredible living record of your journey, the wisdom you collect, and the transformation that happens along the way.

The 13 spells gathered here are super-simple (making them ideal for beginners) yet they will serve you well through the years – a circle of protection, charms for love, workings for abundance, balance spells and simply lunar rituals. These are the foundations of witchcraft, the threads from which greater magick is woven.

Let this be your invitation to begin. As you write, cast, and reflect, you step into a sacred conversation with the LIFE herself, and it will deepen with every spell you keep.

So, open your heart, and let these spells guide your very first steps into the art of the witch’s spell book…

Section 1: Protection & Cleansing Spells

Every witch’s craft begins with safety and clarity. These spells are the guardians of your practice, enabling you to create sacred space, keeping your home free from heaviness and negativity, and shielding you from harm.

Protection and cleansing spells are the first foundation stones of any spell book.

1. Circle of Protection

Before working magick, cast a circle to create a safe boundary.

Stand at the centre of your space and imagine drawing a sphere of bright, white light around you, shimmering like a kind of bubble. Many witches call upon the four directions – North, East, South, and West – to strengthen this boundary. Inside the circle, only the energy you welcome may enter.

It is both your shield and your sacred temple.

2. Home Cleansing Spell

Your home is your sanctuary, and its energy deserves care. Walk clockwise through your home, burning rosemary, juniper or incense, and carry the smoke through every room, focusing on corners and doorways where energy lingers.

Speak aloud your intention, such as: “I release all heaviness, I invite peace.” Once done, sprinkle salt water along thresholds to seal the work. Your space will feel brighter, calmer, and more alive.

**Do not use endangered herbs or plants from traditions you don’t belong to. It’s always best to source locally.

3. Mirror Spell for Deflecting Negativity

Mirrors are ancient tools of reflection, and in magick they can shield you from unwanted energy.

Place a small mirror near your doorway, altar, or window. Hold it in your hands and charge it with intention: imagine it shining like a beacon, sending back any harm that comes near. Affirm: “Only love and truth may enter here.” The mirror becomes a quiet guardian, always watching.

Be sure to cleanse your mirror regularly with saltwater.

Section 2: Love & Friendship Spells

Love is the heartbeat of magick, and we’re not talking about romance, but friendship, compassion, and the deep care you need to give yourself! These spells help you invite that connection, release pain, and nurture the bonds that sustain you.

    4. Self-Love Ritual

Light a pink candle, a symbol of love and healing. Sit before it and place your hand over your heart. Speak affirmations aloud: “I am worthy. I am enough. I honor myself.” As the candle burns, imagine its light pouring into you, filling every part of your being with warmth.

When you snuff the flame, carry that love with you, for self-love is the seed of all other love.

    5. Attraction Spell

Begin by writing down the qualities you desire in a partner,  kindness, laughter, honesty, whatever sings to your heart.

Fold the paper three times towards yourself, turning between each fold, and place it beneath a rose quartz crystal. Light a red or pink candle beside it and focus not on a specific person, but on the feeling of being cherished and supported.

This spell calls love that is good for you, aligned with your highest good.

    6. Forgiveness Ritual

Forgiveness is a spell of potent release. It’s not for excusing wrongs, but for finding personal freedom.

Write on paper what you wish to let go of, whether anger toward another or regret toward yourself. Place the paper in a fire-safe dish and burn it, watching the smoke rise.

As the ashes fall, say: “I release you. I free myself.” What remains is space for peace to grow.

Section 3: Prosperity, Luck & Abundance Spells

Abundance is more than coins in your pocket. It is opportunity, joy, and the steady flow of what you need. These spells invite prosperity to your door and clear the way for luck to find you.

    7. Money Drawing Spell

Take a green candle and carve into it a dollar sign, rune, or personal symbol of wealth.

Place a coin at the candle’s base, anoint the candle with cinnamon or basil oil (using upward strokes) and then light it. As the flame rises, visualise money flowing into your life like a steady stream – bills paid, resources secured, abundance arriving with ease.

When the candle has burned down safely, keep the coin in your wallet as a charm.

    8. Good Luck Sachet

Luck can be carried with you wherever you go. Fill a small pouch with herbs like clover, chamomile, or cinnamon, and tuck in a crystal such as citrine or aventurine.

Hold the sachet in both hands and whisper your wish for luck. Carry it in your pocket or bag, and touch it whenever you need an extra boost.

With each squeeze, you are consciously awakening the charm’s energy.

    9. New Moon Manifestation Spell

On the night of the new moon, when the sky is dark and full of possibility, write your intentions for the month ahead. Be clear and heartfelt.

Fold the paper, drip wax from a candle onto it to seal your wishes, and place it on your altar or under your pillow. As the moon grows in the sky, imagine your intentions growing with it, taking form in your life.

Section 4: Healing & Balance Spells

To walk the witch’s path is to seek balance – in body, spirit, and the world around you.

These spells help restore balance, ease heavy emotions, and bring renewal where it’s needed most.

      10. Energy Cleansing Bath Spell

Run a warm bath and add salt for purification, lavender for calm, and rose petals for love. Step into the water and imagine it glowing with light.

As you soak, picture the water drawing out all worry, heaviness, and strain. Say: “I am cleansed, I am renewed.” When you drain the bath, visualize those energies leaving you completely.

      11. Grounding Spell with Stones

When life feels overwhelming, grounding brings you back to centre and connection.

Take a stone from the earth, or a crystal such as hematite, and hold it in both hands. Sit or stand with your feet flat on the ground. Breathe deeply, and feel the stone pulling away scattered energy, anchoring you like a tree with deep roots.

Carry the stone with you (if it’s not too heavy!) for steady balance throughout the day.

      12. Healing Light Visualization

Close your eyes and sit in stillness. Imagine a golden light descending from above, gentle but strong. See it filling your head, your heart, your whole body, easing pain and dissolving worry.

Linger in this glow until you feel lighter, calmer, more whole.

This simple, no-tools-needed spell reminds you that healing energy is always within reach.

        Section 5: General Everyday Magic

Some spells are small yet endlessly useful, helping you to weave magick into daily life. They connect you to the cycles of nature and offer tools you can return to again and again. This is one of my favourite –

        13. Moon Water Spell

Fill a jar with fresh water and place it under the moonlight overnight.

Whisper your intention into it, protection, healing, clarity, or abundance. In the morning, retrieve your moon water, now charged with lunar energy. Use it to bless your altar, water your plants, anoint yourself, or stir into ritual teas.

With each sip or drop, you carry the moon’s magick with you, and the intention you anchored in.

Your witch spell book doesn’t have to be ornate or perfect, it only needs to be yours.

These 13 easy spells are a strong foundation, but how you record, decorate, and work with them will make your book truly powerful. Think of it as a living tool, always growing with you and your craft.

Here are some simple ways to make your witch spell book really effective:

          • Write in your own words: Personal phrasing makes spells more powerful and easier to connect with.

          • Leave space for notes: Record results, adjustments, and reflections after casting.

          • Include correspondences: Record associations for herbs, crystals, colours, and moon phases to make spellcrafting faster, and to help you track patterns.

          • Mark successful spells: Highlight or star the ones that worked well so you can return to them with confidence.

          • Add symbols, sketches, or pressed herbs: Visuals and textures can deepen your connection to the work.

          • Date your entries: This helps track your progress and see how your craft evolves over time.

          • Protect your book: Store it safely, cleanse it occasionally, and treat it as a sacred tool.

A witch’s spell book is never truly finished! It grows with you as a practitioner. So start simple, stay consistent, and let your craft shape the pages into something uniquely yours.
